The 27 students in the spring 2012 Comm361-001/Online Journalism class created five multimedia projects.
Two of the projects (Virginia earthquakes, Pythons in the Everglades) were assisted by Cheryl O’Brien, an Information Officer at the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, Va., and a former student in the class more than a decade ago. Cheryl wanted to return to the class to update her skill set.
All five projects benefited from the assistance of the class technology assistant, Andrew Knight, and Jake McClendon, Photo/Video editor of Connect2Mason, the Student Media convergence site.
Projects utilized the OnMason.com WordPress site builder created by Aram Zucker-Scharff; Storify (the 2011 Online Journalism class was a beta tester for the template); uploading video and audio to YouTube and Vimeo; database visualizations; slideshows; timelines; and social media feedback.
